I never really learned another lanuage before. We learned french in high school, but that was only ever enough to pass the exams. We never ever practiced it outside of the classroom.
This is week three of language school for me and Liz and it is definitely harder and more tiring than I thought it would be. Forcing your brain to try to communicate in another language is hard to do when you are so used to english. You have to constantly force yourself to listen otherwise you just switch off and wait for the other person to throw in some english words so you can keep up.
I was never good in grammar even in english... so trying to learn grammar in another language can be frustrating. I am finding that the best way to learn it is to stop trying to find english equivalents... they just don't exist in Cebuano. For example, there are a lot of particles in Cebuano that they say have no meaning, but that take on meaning depending on their location in the sentance and what they are combined with. It just doesn't make sense to try and find english equivalents.
However, through learning the language Liz and I hope that we will be better equiped to relate and to serve the people of Agdao. Our love goes out to all our friends and family. Please pray for us for continued wisdom and strength.
